Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the gum disease.

Periodontal disease it’s a disease that affects the periodontal ligament, the ligament that connects the tooth to the bone socket. The periodontal infectious disease is caused by bacteria.

When the periodontal disease affects only the gums, it creates a reversible inflammatory process, called gingivitis.

If gingivitis is not treated properly and maintained for long term without specific periodontal treatment then a deeper destruction of the gum tissue starts causing bone and alveolar periodontal ligament destruction.
